Foot fetishism, foot partialism, foot worship, or podophilia is a pronounced ***ual interest in feet.[1] It is the most common form of ***ual preference for otherwise non-***ual objects or body parts.[2]

Characteristics

Foot fetish has been defined as a pronounced ***ual interest in the feet or footwear. Freud considered foot binding as a form of fetishism.[3] For a foot fetishist, points of attraction include the shape and size of the foot and toes (i.e., long toes, short toes, pointed toes, high arches, slender soles, fat toes, long toenails, short toenails, small feet, toenail color), jewelry, toe rings, ankle bracelets, treatments e.g.: french pedicure, state of dress (i.e., barefoot, flip flops, or clad in socks or nylons), odor, and any form of sensory interaction, e.g. licking, sucking, tickling, people giving foot jobs, pedal pumping and trampling/stomping.[3]

Research

Relative frequency

In order to estimate the relative frequency of fetishes researchers at the University of Bologna examined 381 Internet discussions of her foot fetish groups, in which at least 5,000 people had been participating. Researchers estimated the prevalences of different fetishes based on (a) the number of discussion groups devoted to a particular fetish, (b) the number of individuals participating in the groups and (c) the number of messages exchanged. It was concluded that the most common fetishes were for body parts or for objects usually associated with body parts (33% and 30% respectively). Among those people preferring body parts, feet and toes were preferred by the greatest number, with 47% of those sampled preferring them. Among those people preferring objects related to body parts, footwear (shoes, boots, etc.) was most preferred (64%).[4][5]

In August 2006, AOL released a database of the search terms submitted by their subscribers. In ranking only those phrases that included the word "fetish", it was found that the most common search was for feet.[6]

Relationships to health and disease

Researchers have hypothesized that foot fetishism increases as a response to epidemics of ***ually transmitted diseases. In one study, conducted by Dr. A James Giannini at The Ohio State University [7] an increased interest in feet as ***ual objects was observed during the great gonorrhea epidemic of twelfth century Europe, and the syphilis epidemics of the 16th and 19th centuries in Europe. In the same study, the frequency of foot-fetish depictions in pornographic literature was measured over a 30 year interval. An exponential increase was noted during the period of the current AIDS epidemic. In these cases, ***ual foot play was viewed as a safe-*** alternative. However, the researchers noted that these epidemics overlapped periods of relative female emancipation. ***ual focus on female feet was also hypothesized to have been a reflection of a more dominant posture of the woman in ***ual-social relations. (The first surviving reference of foot fetish is by Bertold of Regensburg in 1220. [8]) [9]

Causation
See also: ***ual fetishism#Psychological origins and development

Neurologist Vilayanur S. Ramachandran proposed that foot fetishism is caused by the feet and the genitals occupying adjacent areas of the somatosensory cortex, possibly entailing some neural crosstalk between the two.[10]

Treatment
See also: ***ual fetishism#Treatment

There are two possible treatments for fetishism: cognitive therapy and psychoanalysis, though treatment does not have to be necessary. Medicine can also be used but generally this is not very effective. All these may be complemented by additional treatments.

Cognitive therapy

Cognitive therapy seeks to change the patient's behavior without analyzing how and why it shows up. It is based on the idea that fetishism is the result of conditioning or imprinting.

One possible therapy is aversive conditioning: the patient is being confronted with his fetish and as soon as ***ual arousal starts, exposed to a displeasing stimulus. It is reported that in earlier times painful stimuli such as electric shocks have been used as aversive stimulus. Today a common aversive stimulus are photographs that show unpleasing scenes such as penned in genitals. In a variant called assisted aversive conditioning, an assistant releases abominable odors as aversive stimulus.

Another possible therapy is a technique called thought stop: the therapist asks the patient to think of his fetish and suddenly cries out "stop!". The patient will be irritated, his line of thought broken. After analyzing the effects of the sudden break together, the therapist will teach the patient to use this technique by himself to interrupt thoughts about his fetish and thus prevent undesired behavior.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis tries to spot the traumatic unconscious experience that caused the fetishism in first instance. Bringing this unconscious knowledge to consciousness and thus enabling the patient to work up his trauma rationally and emotionally shall relieve him from his problems. As opposed to cognitive therapy, psychoanalysis tackles the cause itself.

There are versatile attempts at this analyzing process, including talk therapy, dream analysis and play therapy. Which method will be chosen depends upon the problem itself, the patient's attitude and reactions to certain methods and the therapist's education and preference.

This type of treatment is rarely used.

Medication

Pharmaceutical treatment consists of various forms of drugs that inhibit the production of *** steroids, above all male testosterone and female estrogen. By cutting down the level of *** steroids, ***ual desire is diminished. Thus, in theory, a patient might gain the ability to control his fetish and reasonably process his own thoughts without being distracted by ***ual arousal. Also, the application may give the patient relief in everyday life, enabling him to ignore his fetish and get back to daily routine. Other research has assumed that fetishes may be like obsessive-compulsive disorders, and has looked into the use of psychiatric drugs (serotonin uptake inhibitors and dopamine blockers) for controlling paraphilias that interfere with a person's ability to function.

Although ongoing research has shown positive results in single case studies with some drugs, e. g. with topiramate[11], there is not yet any medicament that tackles fetishism itself. Because of that, physical treatment is only suitable to support one of the psychological methods.

My friend has a strange fetish. He likes smearing himself in poop when he is masturbating. Is this very strange or dangerous? He doesn't eat it, only smears it over himself. He is my best friend and thought he should tell me about this weird fetish, as he calls it.

Dear Dave (no, not that Dave),

Hello, and thanks for the visual!

Let's see...Strange? Definitely. Dangerous? Probably not, as long as it is his own poop and not someone else's.

The thing that is by far weirder is the fact that he confided this in you. I had a similar question before (See Finger-lickin' Good) and there were a good variety of opinions of the subject.

Be careful when shaking hands is all I can say. And for the record, your friend might just want to discuss this fetish with a qualified professional in the mental health field, as this behavior may hinder him in the dating world. Although, maybe there are some folks who would go along with it -- the world IS a strange place, after all.

Please be advised that I am only a Poonurse. I am NOT a medical doctor. Any advice I give should be taken moderate skepticism. Please consult a REAL medical doctor if you feel you have a serious medical condition.

-- Poonurse

Poonurse is an RN with 25 years experience in labor and delivery. Her qualifications include seeing a lot of poop, and owning a computer. Also, she works in Michigan, which she calls the ******* of the universe, so that's another bit of credibility. Got a question for her?

Coprophagia is the consumption of feces, from the Greek κόπρος copros ("feces") and φαγεῖν phagein ("to eat"). Many animal species practice coprophagia as a matter of course; other species do not normally consume feces but may do so under unusual conditions.

[edit] Coprophagia in animals
Two Common Blue butterflies consume a small lump of feces lying on a rock.
A female Physiphora alceae feeding on feces in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Coprophagous insects consume and redigest the feces of large animals. These feces contain substantial amounts of semi-digested food (herbivores' digestive systems are especially inefficient). The most notable feces-eating insect is the dung-beetle and the most ubiquitous is the fly.

Pigs, like the above insects, will eat the feces of herbivores that leave a significant amount of semi-digested matter. In certain cultures, it was common for poor families to collect horse feces to feed their pigs. Pigs are also known to eat their own feces and even human feces as well. However, domesticated pigs should not be allowed to eat any sort of feces, as this contributes to the risk of parasite infection. Perhaps for reasons associated with pigs' ready coprophagy, pork was scripturally banned as human food first in the Old Testament and then the Qur'an. Practicing Jews, Seventh Day Adventists and Muslims familiar with this behavior by pigs may cite it as an additional important reason why pork should not be eaten.

Capybara, rabbits, hamsters and other related species do not have a complex ruminant digestive system. Instead they extract more nutrition from grass by giving their food a second pass through the gut. Soft fecal pellets of partially digested food are excreted and generally consumed immediately. They also produce normal droppings, which are not eaten.

Young elephants, pandas, koalas, and hippos eat the feces of their mother to obtain the bacteria required to properly digest vegetation found on the savanna and in the jungle. When they are born, their intestines do not contain these bacteria (they are completely sterile). Without them, they would be unable to obtain any nutritional value from plants.

Gorillas eat their own feces and the feces of other gorillas. Similar behavior has also been observed among Chimpanzees. Such behavior may serve to improve absorption of vitamins or of nutritive elements made available from the re-ingestion of seeds.

Hamsters and chinchillas eat their own droppings, which are thought to be a source of vitamins B and K, produced by bacteria in the gut. Apes have been observed eating horse feces for the salt content. Monkeys have been observed eating elephant feces. Coprophagia also has been observed in the naked mole rat.

[edit] Coprophagia in dogs
This article may contain original research or unverified claims. Please improve the article by adding references. See the talk page for details. (July 2008)

Coprophagia is a behavior often observed in dogs. Boston Terriers are especially prone to this type of behavior. Hofmeister, Cumming, and Dhein (2001) wrote that this behavior in dogs has not been well-researched and prepared a study.[1] In a preliminary paper, they write that there are various hypotheses for this behavior in canines, although none have been proven:

* Dogs might want attention from their caretakers.
* They might have anxiety or stress or worry about being punished for bad behaviors.
* They had been punished for having defecated in the past, and attempt to clean up out of fear of being punished again.
* Dog are, by nature, scavengers, and this might be within the range of scavenger behavior.
* They may be trying to prevent the scent from attracting predators.
* The texture and temperature of fresh feces approximates that of regurgitated food, which is how mothers in the wild provide solid food to their pups.
* Feces (particularly cat feces) contain protein; overfeeding can also increase the quantity of undigested matter in the feces.
* The coprophagia may be due to assorted health problems, including:
o Pancreatitis
o Intestinal infections
o Food allergies, leading to malabsorption
* The dogs might be hungry, such as when eating routines are changed, food is withheld, or nutrients are not properly absorbed.
* Carnivores may sometimes eat or roll in the feces of their prey to ingest and exude scents that mask their own.

Another hypothesis is that dogs want to investigate the diet of their opponents and get more acquainted with their smell.

Some veterinarians recommend adding meat tenderizer to dog food, as this makes the feces taste excessively bad to dogs. Several companies produce food additives that can also be added to the animal's food to make feces taste bad. Often, these food additives will contain Capsicum Oleoresin, which gives off a repugnant odor making the fecal matter undesirable to the dog.

[edit] Coprophagia in humans

[edit] ***ual aspects

Coprophagia is uncommon in humans. A subset of coprophiles engage in this practice. Psychologists using the classification system of the DSM-IV would consider this to be a symptom of the paraphilia known as coprophilia. Coprophagia is also sometimes depicted in pornography, usually under the term "scat"[citation needed]. The term "scat" is also frequently used to refer to the practice on online sites such as craigslist in the M4M section. Also, in some rare forms of pica, humans have been known to ingest fecal matter.

[edit] Medical aspects

From the medical literature, coprophagia has been observed in a small number of patients with dementia and/or schizophrenia[2] and depression.[3]

Consuming other people's feces carries the risk of contracting diseases and bacteria spread through fecal matter, such as E. coli, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis E, pneumonia, polio, and influenza. Coprophagia also carries a risk of contracting intestinal parasites. Vaccinations are generally recommended for those who engage in this practice.[citation needed]

Lewin (2001) reports that "... consumption of fresh, warm camel feces has been recommended by Bedouins as a remedy for bacterial dysentery; its efficacy (probably attributable to the antibiotic subtilisin from Bacillus subtilis) was confirmed by German soldiers in Africa during World War II."[4] The introduction of foreign bacteria into the human GI tract via infusion of fecal enemas is, moreover, an established medical practice in cases of ulcerative colitis, especially where the patient's own intestinal flora has been significantly depleted by antibiotic therapy applied for other maladies.[5]

[edit] Cultural aspects

* Kopi Luwak is a coffee made from coffee beans that have been ingested and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet.
* Punk musician and performance artist GG Allin often engaged in coprophagia during his performances.
* Divine was well known for his consumption of dog feces at the conclusion of Pink Flamingos.
* In one scene of the film Salò, adolescent prisoners are fed feces at a dinner banquet; another scene also has a man defecating and forcing a girl to eat his feces.
* Coprophagia came into recent spotlight after viral video 2 Girls 1 Cup spread on the Internet in 2007.
* Serial killer Albert Fish was known to indulge on coprophagia, amongst other types of masochism.

Coprophilia (from Greek κόπρος, kópros—excrement and φιλία, filÃ*a—liking, fondness), also called scat,[1] is the paraphilia involving ***ual pleasure from feces.[2][3] In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV-TR), it is classified under 302.9 Paraphilia Not Otherwise Specified and has no diagnostic criteria other than a general statement about paraphilias that says "the diagnosis is made if the behavior, ***ual urges, or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning." Furthermore, the DSM-IV-TR notes, "Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are paraphilic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment (e.g. are obligatory, result in ***ual dysfunction, require participation of nonconsenting individuals, lead to legal complications, interfere with social relationships)."

Although not all coprophiles would necessarily be sadomasochists, little data on the prevalence of this behavior is available except from studies of the SM community. A study of 164 male sadomasochists from Finland from two sadomasochism clubs[4] found that 18.2% had engaged in coprophilia; 3% as a sadist, 6.1% as a masochist, and 9.1% as both. Eighteen percent of hetero***uals in the study pool had tried coprophilia; 17% of homo***uals had (no statistically significant difference between hetero***uals and homo***uals). In a separate article,[5] a subset of 12 men from that study who engaged in bestiality was analyzed and found that 54.5% of the 12 men had engaged in coprophilic behaviors, compared with only 8.3% of 12 of the men who did not engage in bestiality who matched up logically with each of the 12 who did. (A matched pairs study was done.)

[edit] Cleveland steamer/Surrey Steamer

The Cleveland steamer (or "Surrey Steamer" as it is known in Great Britain) is a form of coprophilia, where one defecates on another's chest, then rocks back and forth imitating the motion of a steamroller.[6] [7] The term received news attention through its use in a U.S. Congress staff hoax email and being addressed by the United States Federal Communications Commission.[8]

Usage examples:

* The term Surrey Steamer was first coined by C.R.Harris, the famous Sinophile and Impressionist.
* In 2002, the Detroit, Michigan talk radio show Deminski & Doyle began an educational half-hour discussion of urban-legendary *** acts with the statement, "Try to describe carefully what a 'Cleveland steamer' would be...."[9] Fifteen months later, the Federal Communications Commission proposed a fine of $27,500 to the station's owner, Infinity Broadcasting, through a Notice of Apparent Liability (NAL)[10] that specifically referenced Cleveland steamer in the notice.[9]
* In 2005, a young staffer for U.S. Representative Jane Harman made news by sending around a hoax email stating that one of Lyndon LaRouche's followers "decided to drop her pants and plopped a Hot Cleveland Steamer on our carpet. House Janitorial Services is currently cleaning up this wretched filth."[11] The email was sent in response to a string of e-mail messages poking fun at LaRouche followers.[11] By the end of the year, the event was listed as part of the best of Heard on the Hill (HOH).[12]
* In Australia's Big Brother in 2005, the housemates discussed the process of the Cleveland steamer, in the "Uncut" version of the show (later named "Adults Only"; taken off the air in 2006).[13]

Animal roleplay may be either a non-***ual or an erotic ***ual role-play (when it may also be called petplay, ponyplay, ponyism, kittenplay, or pup-play). In its erotic ***ual role-play form, one or more of the participants takes on the role of a real or imaginary animal in character, including appropriate mannerisms and behavior, and sometimes a partner will act as another animal, or, in a ***ual context, may take the role of rider, trainer, or caretaker (or even breeding partner).

It is also commonly used with young children, who enjoy getting dressed up in animal costumes and enact perceived characteristics of an animal. It is also used in physical education especially with children, as an enjoyable way to encourage certain exercises. In psychodrama, animal roleplay may be used for a person to explore their personality, as a form of role reversal.

Overview

The origins of animal roleplay and petplay are probably various and diverse, again depending upon the participants involved. However, its origins are certainly influenced by costuming, fiction, myth and legend, roleplay and psychodrama in their various aspects.

Cultural and ritual use

Non-***ual animal roleplay, or therianthropy, was a common and integral part of ritual in many tribal cultures both in recent and likely prehistoric times, where a member (or members) of the tribe would take the role physically and often spiritually, of an animal that was either revered, or hunted. Examples of the former include many of the American Indian tribes and Arctic native peoples, examples are evidenced by cave paintings. In 1911 Julia Tuell photographed the last Animal Dance ("Massaum") performed by the Northern Cheyenne of Montana.

It is also sometimes used in education, especially physical education, as an enjoyable way to encourage people to exercise the body in unusual ways, by mimicking various animals.

Erotic use

Like much of erotic play and roleplay, animal roleplay in an erotic or relational context is entirely defined by the people involved and by their mood and interests at the time of play. It ranges from the simple imitation of a vocal whinnying of a horse to the barking, panting or playful nudging of a puppy, or playful behaviour of a kitten, to crawling around on all fours and being fed, or petted, by hand. (In the latter instance, its motives may be similar to those of ageplay, ie taking on a role that one feels spiritually appropriate or which allows for nurturing, and a change from usual roles in everyday life). To the greater extremes of dressing up as a pony in modified horse tack, masks, prosthetics and temporary bondage based body modification (such as binding the forearms to the upperarms and/or the calves to the thighs).

Public participation in human animal roleplay is varied. A couple could inconspicuously role-play a silly but loving pet play scene in public, but it would look like one partner is merely stroking the other's neck innocently to the casual observer. In the case of many convention-going furries and some BDSM fetishists, one partner may wear a dog collar with a leash attached.

The reasons for playing such a character or animal can vary as much as the actual physical manifestations and intensity of the play. Some people enjoy being able to "cut loose" into a different, or more dynamic personality (eg, Were-creatures or Catgirls; see other variations). In some cases, pet play is seen as a loving, quiet cuddling time where there is no need for verbalizations and the simple act of stroking, rubbing and holding the other partner is satisfying or reassuring in and of itself for those involved. For others, there may be a spiritual side to it. Some feel closer to their animal totem, while others may identify with something akin to a deeper side or part of their own psyche (see: Therianthropy). For still others, there is the experience of power exchange setup in a context or structure which they can accept. Clearly, again, it depends on the people involved and what they bring to it or take from it.

Additionally, some cases could be considered a type of animal transformation fantasy. They can have strong elements of exhibitionism, be totally enjoyed in the privacy of the home, or lie somewhere between either boundary. While not widespread, erotic human-animal roleplay is still enjoyed by a sizeable number of people. However, it is still primarily identified with BDSM practice, or as being associated with furry or other alternative lifestyle activities.

For a majority of participants, it has no connection whatsoever with zoophilia or bestiality, which are controversial and would usually be considered edgeplay in BDSM circles.

Other considerations

It should be pointed out that each type of play can focus on a certain "strength" of an animal character. Pony play often involves the practice and training that a horse owner or trainer would put their horse through to learn how to walk, canter, etc, as modified for human limbs. Puppy play often can involve BDSM related discipline. Cow Play often involves fantasies of lactation and impregnation. The usual limits of safe, sane and consensual apply to roleplay as much as any other activity between humans who accept and respect their partner's interests and limits. For most, this does not include bestiality.

Some people believe that they have certain animal 'instincts' and through animal roleplay can let them out. This is especially true in the BDSM communities, where some people 'live' as their chosen animal 24/7. This type of mentality goes beyond roleplay and becomes a full lifestyle for the parties involved. There are also 'hybrids'. These are humans who live part time as one type of animal, and part time as another. This is usually determined by the situation.

There seems to be a growing trend among the BDSM scene in animal roleplay, especially pup and kitten play. Playing the role of a pup or kitten is one of giving over complete control over to another, while the 'Master or Handler' expects only unconditional love and obedience from his/her animal.

BDSM pony-play

Pony-play is sometimes referred to as "The Aristotelian Perversion," in reference to legend that Aristotle had a penchant for being ridden like a horse. Ponies (people involved in pony-play) generally divide themselves to three groups although some will participate in two or perhaps all three:

* Cart ponies: ponies who pull a sulky with their owner.
* Riding ponies: ponies who are ridden, either on all fours or on two legs, with the "rider" on the shoulders of the "pony" (also known as Shoulder riding). Note that a human back is generally not strong enough to take the weight of another adult without risk of injury, so four-legged "riding" is generally symbolic, with the "rider" taking most of their weight on their own legs.
* Show ponies: ponies who show off their dressage skills and often wear elaborate harnessess, plumes and so on.

A documentary film Pony Passion was produced by British pony play club De Ferre in 2003 showing their club's activities and Born in a Barn, a 2005 documentary film, depicted the lives of several pony-play enthusiasts.

BDSM pup-play

Pup play or dog play is sometimes (though not always) associated with leather culture. at least one of the participants acts out canine mannerisms and behaviors, or simply imagines such behaviors or identities, and attempts to assume the mental state of a dog. Pup-play does not require any involvement with bestiality. The dominant role is taken by a "Handler," "Trainer," or a "Master." The submissive may be called a "pup," a "dog," a "stray," or in the case of a more aggressive or dominant participant that still identifies as a dog, an "alpha." In the pup-play community, biological canines are referred to as "canines," to differentiate between them and human role players (the pup, dog, or alpha). Pup play is more about being a playful, goofy being on all fours who shows his/her Master their love and devotion. Instinct also plays a big role in pup play.[1]

BDSM kitten-play

In kitten-play the person assumes the less serious role of a pet that keeps some independence and - as part of the fantasy - might retaliate against the partner trying to tame him or her. Kitten-play is less well known than pony or pup-play, although in recent years has been growing in popularity.[citation needed]
Snake play or worm play

In snake or worm play, the person is required to crawl around on his or her belly. Often, bondage is used to keep the person in this mode.

Other variations

Some consider costume play, or cosplay, anime catgirls to be a form or look of pet play as well, because these are generally young female characters that have the combined aspects of females and cats (generally a human girl with cat ears, a tail, fangs and a propensity for catlike affection or curiosity). Examples would be Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, Pink from Dragon Pink and others. Some superheroes, heroines and villains could also be classified as related to pet play, such as DC Comics's Wildcat, Catwoman and Vixen, Marvel's Tigra, Man-Wolf and Black Cat, or even Nastassja Kinski's Irena Gallier in the 1982 film Cat People (a remake of the 1942 Simone Simon film), and Miss Kitty from the Brendan Fraser movie Monkeybone. All involve animal qualities taken on by a human. Some would even count the enactment or spiritual belief in therianthropy (werewolves, werecats, etc) as falling under human animal roleplay or transformation play as well.
